In the recent years, with the rising prices of health care services and facilities, health insurance have become more necessary than ever. Health insurance can protect you and your family from financial burdens when you or a family member gets sick. If you consider the potential costs, health insurance can help save you from a devestating financial burden.

There are two types of medical insurance known commonly as indemnity and managed-care plans. The major differences between the two types is reflected in how you choose your provider, how out-of-pocket expenses are handled and how bills get paid. Under an indemnity policies, you usually can choose any doctor or hospital that you wish when seeking services. Indemnity plans usually provide the most flexibility in choosing where to receive care. Under a managed-care plan, you either select a primary care physician who treats and directs all health care for you or you are given a list of preferred providers from which you can chose any provider. Under indemnity plans, you often to pay upfront and are reimbursed after a deductible is applied. Under a managed care plan, providers agree to perform services for patients at pre-negotiated rates and usually the provider handles the claims processing for you.

Most employers provide basic medical insurance under a group policy availabe to company employees. If employer provided health insurance is available to you, this is generally the cheapest health coverage option. If you are unemployed, self-employed or if your employer does not provide medical coverage you can usually purchase it independently through an insurance agent or broker. Generally you should opt for your employer provided healthcare if available. It is usually the lowest cost option. The second most affordable option is often an employer provided Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA) plan. Under COBRA, if you leave your current job, you have the option to continue your health care coverage for up to 18 months. Under COBRA, you are required to pay the full premium yourself even if your employer paid part of your premium while you were employed. The employer may also charge an additional administrative fee. In South Carolina, the law provides that an employee or member who has been insured under the group policy for at least six months and who loses coverage for any reason (other than nonpayment of premium) may continue coverage for the fractional policy month remaining plus six months. If you are not eligible for COBRA or your COBRA option has expired, your old coverage did not expire due to non-payment and you have had 18 months of continuous group health coverage under an employer group health plan, then you are generally considered “Federally Eligible” for a Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) plan. HIPAA is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996. It limits insurers' ability to deny or delay claims, reduces your chances of losing existing coverage, makes it easier and less risky to switch health plans and prohibits insurance discrimination based on health problems.

The South Carolina Health Insurance Pool (SCHIP) was created by the state in 1989 to make health insurance coverage available to residents of South Carolina who are either unable to obtain health insurance because of a medical condition or whose premium for health coverage exceeds 150% of the pool rate. Coverage under the SCHIP includes doctor visits, prescription drugs, outpatient and in-hospital care, maternity, ambulance, labs and x-rays, skilled nursing care, hospice, home health visits, transplants, durable medical equipment, mental health and substance abuse, physical, speech and occupational therapy. SCHIP coverage is administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina. Contact the SCHIP Administrator to learn more about the SCHIP program and its eligibility requirements.
